Yes, but expert at what? [03 Jun 2006|05:12pm]
[ mood | goofy ]

My initals are SME. I think it's great that "SME" is often used as an acronym for "Subject Matter Expert". I don't know that this particular phrase was in common use when my parents picked out my name, but they sure were right!

:P

A pet peeve [22 Nov 2005|05:19pm]
[ mood | fine ]

I hate hate HATE it when people tell me "You should have..." ESPECIALLY hen it's a "professional" who's "trying" to help me. I heard it from my realtor when I was having trouble getting my mortgage package in time. "You should have used someone else. It was a bad idea to use these people from the beginning."

I should have? Well, I didn't. Therefore, whatever follows the "You should have..." is completely irrelevant except that it's usually judgemental. And if you, Mr./Ms. Expert, were actually trying to be helpful [instead of pointing out why you *can't* be helpful], you would have told me this earlier when I could have done something about it. Unless...do you happen to have a Delorian with the Flux Capacitor option in the parking lot of your fake wood panelling office? No? I didn't think so. So shut up already.

Have a safe trip! ...yeah, right. [20 Oct 2005|11:31pm]
[ mood | ponderous ]

I wonder, when we tell someone(for example) "Drive carefully! Have a safe trip!" whether it makes any difference whatsoever in how they drive or conduct themselves during said trip. Or, when we hear those sentiments ourselves, whether it changes the decisions we would make about how or where or when we'll drive one iota.

Really. When we've been told to drive carefully, and are then approaching an orange light, do we really think "well, I *would* run it, but my buddy/mom/granddad/tax advisor told me to drive carefully, so I guess I'll stop." No, swe don't.

Yet, when we tell someone to be safe, we usually mean it. It's not like the "hi, how are ya?" [or "Hey, how y'all doin'" for those who speak Southern] for which we never want to know the real answer. But do we actually think that our words will somehow make the journey/bungee jump/doughnut run any more safe? I think we do. But I think we're all a bit blindly optimistic when it comes to thinking that our words have magic powers there.

Quick like fox [20 Oct 2005|11:25pm]
[ mood | crushed ]

Wow. I mentioned to a friend of mine this evening that I had a blog, but wouldn't tell him where it was, or even who hosted it. He said he could find it, but I figured he'd probably give up before he succeeded, since I don't make enough details about it public in my "real" life to make it all that easy to find. I like to know who's reading my LJ, so I make it a challenge.

Well, he left the bar before I did, and before I even left - he was probably home for less than an hour - he called and told me my handle. Holy cow! That boy haz the mad searching skillz! I don't know what search engine he's using, but I gotta get me some of that!

I mean, I've googled for the LJ in the past, and it's possible to find it, but I didn't think it was *that* easy!

Ha. Guess I have to stop saying all those mean things about him, now, huh?

Hi Joel!

When I grow up, I want to be Michaelangelo. Or maybe DaVinci. An expert in my field in 20-30 different fields, and complete with patrons so that I wouldn't have to waste time just earning money to cover the mortgage.

Lampwork, writing, photography, odd one-off design projects, sincere Christian, interior design, landscape design, kayaker, rafter, skater, supermodel..Yep, all of that, and that's not nearly the complete list!

Sounds better [19 Jul 2005|03:50pm]
[ mood | I'm back ]

There are 746 watts in one horsepower. That means that a 250 horsepower engine is also a 186,500 watt engine, and that sounds much cooler.

So that's what I'm going to use from now on.

Of course, I don't currently have a 250 HP engine. It's more like 135 HP, but still, 100710 watts is a lot of somethings and sounds nifty.

Thursday! No! Friday! No! Quondday? [03 Jun 2005|03:43pm]
[ mood | rushed ]

Holiday weeks always throw me off. Where did Monday go? Did we have two Sundays? Or is it now Thursday, meaning that I got my Friday off this week?

The calendar says it's Friday, but my intuition says I should have one more day left in the week.

If I had that day, I would be filling it up with LiveJournal entries. For now, I must let it suffice to say that Asheville was fantabulous, and that car camping, for which I am not yet ready, should be eventful. And the silly people who think I can hike 15 miles had better have another think.

Hope all you lovely readers have a good weekend too!

P.S. I've apparently been sending too much email recently, because "Ctrl-Enter" does not work to "send" an LJ entry.
P.P.S. Remind me when I get back to tell y'all about the squirrel tail.

Mojitos! [26 May 2005|12:10pm]
[ mood | content ]

So some friends and I have been looking for a good recipe for Mojitos.  And it just so happened that there was one printed in the Charlotte Observer yesterday!  Now, I realize that this is perhaps the most mundane of the ways we had considered getting said recipe, but it may be a good starting point...

MOJITOS
Makes 1. Adapted from "The Craft of the Cocktail," by Dale Degroff.
2 sprigs mint, divided
1 ounce simple syrup (see instructions, page 1E)
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1 1/2 ounces light rum
Crushed ice
2 to 3 ounces club soda

PLACE 1 mint sprig, simple syrup and lime juice in the bottom of a mixing glass. Pound the mint lightly with a muddler or wooden spoon. (You don't want to pulverize it, just release the mint flavor.)

ADD rum and fill the mixing glass with ice cubes. Cover and shake.

FILL a glass 3/4 full with crushed ice. Strain the mint mixture over the crushed ice. Top with club soda.

GARNISH with the remaining mint sprig and serve with a straw.

Now, who's up for playing bartender?...we can see if they're as good as the ones we'll have tonight!

This just isn't me. [24 May 2005|04:26pm]
[ mood | flirty ]

Shiny New Boy's plane will land in Charlotte in one hour and thirty minutes. YAY!

I know that down to the minute and he's only been gone two days. It's not unusual for us to be apart for two or more days. And just two weekends ago, it was me who was out of town for three days. But this little business trip of his has gotten to me more than I expected.

I've missed him and can't wait for him to call and tell me he's back so we can hang out and eat fabulous takeout from Al Mike's.

Windy [24 May 2005|03:50pm]
[ mood | embarrassed ]

Isn't it interesting how random things can come together to produce unanticipated results.

If it's windy at all uptown, it's _really_ windy in front of my office building. After lunch today, it was a bit breezy, so it was even stronger next to the office building.

I'm behind on laundry.
This meant that this morning it was easier to dress up than to wear my more casual and usual work slacks.
So I'm wearing a flowery, gauzy skirt with layers and such.

Remember that wind I mentioned? Well, apparently, in addition to the general force that is usually present, I discovered today that there's a bit of an updraft, too.

Yep. One good gust, and I'm doing the Marilyn-Monroe-on-a-grate impression.

And now? All of Tryon St. has now seen my underwear. Great. Now there's a butterfly effect for you. At least I didn't see anyone I knew....and all my lunch buddies had gone the other way.

Continuing a thought [18 May 2005|06:41pm]
[ mood | amused ]

The last entry mentioned the correspondance between cars and boys. Reliant-Todd, Monte Carlo-Alan, and 'Ru-Josh.

As I think about it a little more, there's further eerie similarities:
Reliant:
* Arrived: Bought by my parents from the SC State Surplus.
* Left: Just got too unreliable. Needed to replace it.
Todd:
* Arrived: Well, not out of surplus. So my metaphor can't be stretched quite that far. Get over it.
* Left: I broke up with him: wasn't what I wanted/needed, besides, he had broken up with me once before.

Monte Carlo:
* Arrived: Bought new.
* Left: Crunched by a guy in diabetic shock, and totalled.
Alan:
* Arrived: He didn't come from a dealer, but he did help me buy the car.
* Left: Crunched me with a post-Valentine's Day dumping. I wasn't totalled but I was in shock for a while.

'Ru:
* Arrived: Located at a used-car dealership in Blowing Rock.
* Left: Still around.
Josh:
* Arrived: Not from a used-car dealer. But he did drive me to Blowing Rock, test drove the car, and taught me to drive a stickshift.
* Left: His status has changed, but he's still around and reliable.

And I have no idea what all that means about the shiny new boy. I'm not too worried.

Who's gonna drive you home, tonight? [18 May 2005|05:52pm]
[ mood | surprised ]

[I wanted to title this posting "Of breakdowns and breakups" but, while I thought it was clever, it just sounded too negative.]

I've just realized that I've had a roughly 1:1 correspondance between cars and boyfriends in my life.

1992 - 1997: my "grandma blue" Plymouth Reliant K car.
1994(?) - 1997(?): Todd
[Jul] 1997 - [Oct] 2003: the Torch-Red Monte Carlo Z34.
[May?] 1996 - [Feb] 2003: Alan
[Nov] 2003 - present: the 'Ru.
[Apr] 2003 - [May] 2004: Josh

I'm sure this trend is just a weird coincidence rather than a constraint, but it seems that give or take 6 months, a change in boys signals a change in cars, or vice versa.

But hrmmm..... now that I've got a shiny new boy, does that mean that my shiny new Garnet Red Pearl Subaru Outback 2.5 XT Wagon, complete with leather and sunroof, and with vanity plate reading "RUBYRU" isn't as far off as I thought? I really didn't think so, but if history repeats.........?

Blink blink blink blink flash flash twinkle twinkle blink blink blink blink flash flash twinkle etc [12 May 2005|03:47pm]
[ mood | giddy ]

I got a new blinky battery for my phone the other day (having ruined the previous one a few months ago at my birthday party). I needed a new battery, so I choose one on eBay that had blue LED's. Because it's cool, you know?

It's supposed to flash and carry on when I get a call, and then perhaps when I'm on the phone. The battery itself has an antenna, to catch the signal from my phone I guess. Then it's supposed to stop. But get this...it's not stopping! I don't know what signal it's getting in here, because my phone has been pretty quiet today. My inbox is hopping, but I don't think webmail clients put off much in the way of radiation.

It's like having one's very own techno club right here in cubeville.

I finally hid it in a spare Altoid's tin, to see if that would shield it from anything. No go. Though it did prevent me from seeing it and wondering why the police were pulling me over at the office...I don't type *that* fast, after all.
